Vape Ban in Perak, Malaysia: State Aims for October Implementation, Says Exco Member

The Perak state government is moving forward with plans to implement a state-wide ban on the sale of e-cigarettes and vapes, with the proposed measure potentially taking effect in October, according to a statement by A Sivanesan, chairman of the Perak Human Resources, Wellbeing, Indian Group Affairs and National Integration Committee.

During a press briefing following the “Orthopedic Symposium Programme: Latest Developments and Best Practices in the Orthopedic Field” at the Kinta Riverfront Hotel in Ipoh, Sivanesan confirmed that a working paper outlining the potential vape and e-cigarette ban is currently being prepared by the state health department, led by director Dr. Feisul Idzwan Mustapha.

“The working paper is being developed with a sense of urgency, and we have directed the department to complete it as quickly as possible,” Sivanesan said. “Once finalized, it will be submitted to the state government council for discussion and potential implementation by October.”

The move comes after Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad confirmed on June 4 that the state authorities were examining the need to ban the sale of e-cigarettes in Perak. While the proposal has been raised in the state government council, some details are still being refined.

Sivanesan acknowledged that the proposed ban could create concerns among vape operators and distributors. However, he emphasized that the measure is aimed at public health benefits.

“We are prepared to receive complaints, but as long as it serves the public interest, particularly in terms of health, we are committed to moving forward,” he said.

The potential vape and e-cigarette ban has sparked discussions among health experts, businesses, and the public, with concerns over both the health implications and the economic impact of such a regulation.

As the working paper is finalized, further updates are expected from the Perak government on the timeline and scope of the proposed ban.
